If You Lead a Group

Field Manual 2 min read Updated Sep 2026

This page is for players who lead: anyone who runs a business, heads a house, captains a team, or holds a group that other characters can join. What follows is not lore. It is the one thing the world needs from you, and it will not work without you.

The moment that decides a newcomer

When a new player steps up to one of your signs and answers the question, that is often the first real contact they have had with anyone in this world. The research on who stays and who drifts away is blunt about it: a newcomer who connects with a real person early puts down roots, and one who never does usually leaves. You are the real person. That first exchange, handled well, is frequently the difference between a character who becomes a fixture and one who is gone by the end of the week.

Answer like it matters, because it does

When someone applies to your group, treat the moment as real. Reach out. Bring them into a scene. Give them a reason to come back tomorrow. You do not need to explain how you knew they were interested or where you heard their name; the world takes care of the mystery. What you need to do is be warm, be present, and pull them into a story quickly. A newcomer who is welcomed into a live scene in their first days has been given the single most valuable thing this world offers: a person who answered.

The small scene is the whole job

You do not need to stage something elaborate. The most effective welcome is often the smallest: a shift worked alongside them, an introduction to two other characters, a task that gives them somewhere to stand and something to react to. You are not running an orientation. You are giving a stranger a place in a story, and the ordinary scenes do that better than the grand ones. Lead your people toward the newcomer, and let the work do the rest.

If you take one thing from this page: when the world tells you someone new has stepped up, answer. Quickly, warmly, and in character. Everything this library teaches players about putting down roots depends on there being someone here when they arrive. That someone is you.
