Sheriffs Deputy Guide

Read about the role of the Sheriff Deputy and if you're up for it, sign up below

In the Backwaters, justice is not blind. It is calculated. Deputies do not serve the people. They serve the order behind the curtain. Wearing the badge is not a call to righteousness. It is a contract with power.

Keep Order. Collect Tributes. Control the Lost.

The Sheriff’s Department is more than a law enforcement body. It is the enforcement arm of the Syndicate. Deputies are tasked with maintaining a fragile peace that benefits those in control. You are not here to protect. You are here to manage chaos, ensure obedience, and remind the town who truly holds the leash.

The Badge Is a Mask

Behind the uniform, you are a Syndicate agent in plain sight. Deputies walk among the broken, the violent, and the desperate, not to stop them, but to keep them useful. The badge is your access point. The gun is your permission slip. Every scene you enter tilts the balance of the story. Your presence alone creates tension.

  • Deputies Do Not Patrol for Peace: They move through the streets to remind people they are being watched. Seen. Measured.
  • Justice Is a Negotiation: Arrests happen, but often as favors, messages, or leverage. The real punishment rarely comes with paperwork.
  • Power Is the Priority: Who you protect, who you threaten, and who you disappear is your call. The Syndicate trusts you to choose wisely.

Tools of the Role: The Field HUD

Deputies in the Backwaters do not just talk tough. They are equipped with a specialized Field HUD — a custom tool designed for immersive, urban noir roleplay. Built from the ground up for this environment, the HUD gives deputies the ability to interact with the criminal system in real time, documenting actions and shaping long-term consequences for other characters.

  • Track Warrants and APBs: Create and update wanted records for characters across the region. Deputies use the HUD to issue alerts, mark fugitives, and coordinate responses across scenes.
  • Write and Collect Tributes: Deputies can log tribute collections, track who owes what, and use that information to pressure, manipulate, or punish. Every note becomes part of the record.
  • Process Arrests: Through the HUD, deputies can register arrests, assign outcomes, and determine when a story needs to escalate — or disappear quietly.

The Field HUD gives deputies the power to shape the evolving landscape of Port Laveau. With every use, it reinforces your influence and expands your reach. You are not just playing the role. You are changing the story with every decision you log.

The Tribute System

Tributes have replaced citations. Deputies are not writing tickets. They are collecting what is owed. Local businesses, gangs, and independent operators all fall under Syndicate influence. It is your job to visit them, assess compliance, and take payment. Cash, favors, or bodies — every tribute reinforces control.

  • Tributes Are Story Drivers: Use them to start conflict, negotiate power, or apply pressure. They are not a tax. They are a reminder.
  • Nonpayment Has Consequences: Refusal to pay is a direct challenge to the Syndicate. Deputies are expected to respond in kind.
  • Record and Report: Keep track of who paid, who resisted, and who might need a visit after dark.

Control the Lost

Some fall too far to recover. These are the Lost. Broken by trauma, addiction, or despair, they no longer function in normal society. In Port Laveau, they do not disappear. They are taken in, claimed, and conditioned to serve. As a deputy, you oversee that process.

  • Manage Compliance: The Lost may need comfort or coercion. You decide what keeps them in line.
  • Serve Syndicate Needs: Many Lost end up assigned to businesses or operations under Syndicate control. Deputies facilitate those placements.
  • Shape, Do Not Save: Deputies are not healers. They are handlers. You do not fix the Lost. You shape them into something useful.

What Deputies Represent

You are not just a figure of authority. You are a tool of fear, influence, and story. Every action you take builds the Syndicate’s presence in the Backwaters. Every tribute collected, every Lost managed, every threat delivered in silence — it all becomes part of the ongoing narrative of Port Laveau.

  • Presence Matters: Deputies are expected to be seen. Even when silent, your presence shifts the atmosphere of a scene.
  • Start the Trouble: Do not wait for roleplay to come to you. Create scenes. Push tension. Be the spark that turns a quiet moment into a conflict.
  • Use Power Thoughtfully: Arrests and threats should push stories forward. Use them to deepen roleplay, not shut it down.

Archetypes You Can Play

You are not just a deputy. You are a reflection of something darker beneath the surface. Choose your path and let it shape your story:

  • The Hound: Loyal, disciplined, dangerous. Takes orders without question.
  • The Collector: Keeps the books. Knows every debt. Shows up when it is time to pay.
  • The Kind Knife: Offers a smile before making you bleed. Keeps the Lost close through warmth and fear.
  • The Silent Judge: Rarely speaks. But when they arrive, the room gets quiet.
  • The Broken Thing: Once Lost. Now turned into something colder. Repeats the cycle on others.

Apply to Join

This is not a role for someone looking to play a hero. This is a role for those who understand influence, control, and moral decay. To apply, submit through the in-world Story HUD or speak to the Sheriff directly in character. Your backstory should reflect a connection to the underworld or a reason you would abandon your conscience to serve it.

The Syndicate is always watching. The badge is waiting. Choose your role and step into the shadows.
