Your pathway is the arc your character walks, the answer to who you are in this city. Hathian reads you along three roads, and the one you walk the hardest becomes the title the world puts above your head. You do not choose a path by clicking a button. You choose it by how you play, and the city watches, and eventually it calls you what you have earned.
The Criminal
The road most walked in Hathian, and the longest climb. A criminal’s arc runs from Citizen through Deviant, Criminal, Felon, and deeper into the city’s vocabulary of menace: Enforcer, Gangster, Heartless, Jackal, Trigger, Harbinger, Phantom, Butcher, and at the summit, Kingpin. Each title is a reputation earned through scenes of violence, vice, and the kind of ambition the city respects even when it hates you. The climb is not fast. It is measured in months and years of writing the character who earns each name, and the names get darker because the city’s opinion of you gets darker with them.
The Victim
Not every story in Hathian is about power. Some characters are the ones power happens to, and the Victim pathway honors the writers who play that side of the city with as much craft as any criminal. The arc runs from Citizen through Innocent, Victim, Broken, Scarred, Survivor, Haunted, Shattered, Branded, Sleeper, and finally Silenced. These are not insults. They are the city’s record of what your character endured and how it marked them. Some of the most respected players in Hathian’s history walk this path, because playing vulnerability with honesty takes more nerve than playing a gun.
The First Responder
For the ones who wear a badge or carry a med kit, the First Responder path is the longest ladder in the city and the hardest climb. It runs from Boot through Cadet, Blue, Shield, Ranger, Bravo, Operator, Delta, Sentinel, Ronin, Warden, Reaper, Ghost, Saint, and at the very top, Legend. The names tell the story of a career: you start green and end mythic, and the distance between those two is years of showing up, running scenes, and being the person the city calls when it is falling apart. First Responders who also walk a civilian pathway earn progress on both roads, because a cop with a dark side is what this city runs on.
How the path shifts
Your dominant pathway can change. If your character has been a criminal for months and slowly begins playing the victim’s side of the city, the world notices, and when the shift is sustained enough, your title changes to reflect who you have become. The switch is not instant and it is never forced; it is the world catching up to what your writing has been saying. And your highest title on any path is never lost. The city remembers your peak, even if your character walks a different road now.
The tier names are the city’s vocabulary for who you are, and you will hear them from other players, on your Character Card, and in the encounters the world writes for you. The current live pathways page shows where you stand. The only way forward is to keep writing the character who earns the next name.
