Bail and Doing Time

Hathian 3 min read Updated Sep 2026

Getting out of jail is its own roleplay, not a button you press to skip the consequences. Bail runs on a rhythm that gives your time inside room to matter, and the smart play is to treat your sentence as a story rather than a countdown. The city rewards an inmate who makes their time interesting, and quietly judges the one who idles it away.

How bail works

As a rule, bail is not available for the first stretch of a sentence; there may be rare in-character exceptions, but expect to serve some real time first. After that window passes, anyone can be bailed out regardless of their charges, with the amount owed depending on what they did. Officers process bail through the station system and are required to follow it, though in a corrupt department, a cop may well expect an extra favor, financial or otherwise, before the paperwork moves.

Make the money real

Only a fraction of the bail is paid up front; the rest comes due if the character never shows for trial, and since the city has no court system, trials are usually handled off-screen. What makes this good roleplay is treating the money as real. How much can your character actually afford? Will a friend have to lend it, or steal it? Do you now owe a dangerous person a debt you cannot easily repay? A bail that costs your character something is a bail that feeds three more scenes.

You can choose to stay

Bailing out the instant you are able is not always the best story, and you are allowed to refuse it. If your character was arrested for something major, murder, or worse, consider not rushing for the door, because a serious crime with no time served rings hollow. You can request to have your bail denied outright, or to stay longer than the system suggests. Some of the best jail roleplay comes from an inmate who chose to see their sentence through.

Prison in Laveau

If prison roleplay is your thing, the Backwaters offers something the city cannot. Any inmate with a longer sentence can be asked whether they would like to transfer to the prison in Laveau for a time, and the inmate’s consent is always required. Even a short sentence, or an innocent character, can request the transfer, whether it is a judicial error or an officer with a grudge. Reach out to a member of the brass in a private message. The warden, the guards, and the other inmates there will work to give you every kind of scene, and visitors, lawyers, and investigating officers are all welcome. For the details, contact the prison lead.

Parole and probation

The story does not always end at release. If you want to play parole, contact Civil Services to arrange a scene with a probation officer, who has access to visit inmates and can meet you in the appropriate rooms. Escorted by guards until you are back where you belong, parole roleplay extends your character’s entanglement with the system well past the cell, which is exactly what makes it worth playing. For more, reach out to the Civil Services lead or the HPD leads.

Play your time and your release as chapters rather than chores, and a stretch in jail becomes some of the most memorable roleplay Hathian offers. This is where the city’s law begins; the gangs it fights, and the rest of who runs Hathian, follow as this book grows.
