Every campus has gossip. Columtreal’s grew roots. The Vine is the university’s oldest resident, and its corkboard is where the campus reads about itself: fresh notes appear overnight about what actually happened here, with names named, and by the second day the old notes are already curling at the edges to make room for whatever you are about to do next.
The corkboard
The Vine does not invent. If something happened where the campus could see it, the Vine heard about it, and the morning notes will read like they were written by someone who was standing closer than you thought. Play a scene worth talking about and there is a fair chance the board talks about it. This is the part new students take a week to believe: the gossip is about you, your actual scenes, your actual bad decisions, rendered in the Vine’s own venomous, affectionate hand.
Hearts
Every note can be hearted, and hearts flow backward: when the campus loves a story, the person who lived it feels the glow. String together enough talked-about nights and the Vine starts treating you differently, greeting you by name at the board, keeping tabs, bringing you up unprompted. Some names it repeats. A few it cannot stop saying. Nobody is born iconic at Columtreal, but the ladder is right there, and it is made entirely of other people’s attention.
Confessions (did, want, heard)
The board takes submissions, in three flavors. Own up to something you did, and it may surface with your fingerprints artfully smudged. Whisper something you want, and it stays anonymous, resurfacing overnight as one of the board’s hushed notes, a desire loose on campus with no name attached, waiting to see who claims it. Report something you heard, and understand what you are holding: secondhand dirt is a weapon, the Vine treats it like one, and it will not let any single mouth feed it too often. Come back tomorrow; the appetite resets.
The Vine and the faculty
Tenure protects nothing here. The board writes about professors with particular relish, and the campus hearts nothing harder than faculty behaving memorably: a lecture that went somewhere strange, an office hour that ran long, a familiar face where a familiar face should not be. If you teach at Columtreal, assume the Vine audits your classes. Some faculty resent this. The smart ones treat it as a second syllabus.
What the Vine won’t print
The Vine is cruel the way a best friend is cruel, and it has lines it does not cross. Some things it declines to repeat, no matter how juicy, and it does not explain its editorial judgment to anyone. Consider it the one member of campus society with standards, which is exactly why being featured means something.
The Vine is not confined to its board. It slips remarks into your attendance record, it holds court at every party, and it has an opinion about your weekend before you have finished having it. Go read the board. Heart the note that deserves it. Leave it a secret on your way out; it always knows when you are holding one.
