Beyond the predator and the prey, there is a third path in the Backwaters. It is walked in plain sight, armed with a badge and the cold purpose of an executioner. This is the Path of the Law, the journey of the Sheriff’s Deputy, and it is the most direct route to power in the bayou. It is also the most scrutinized, a constant balancing act with the highest stakes.
What the path rewards
Your progression as a deputy is measured in competence, not virtue. Your standing on this path grows when you prove your worth through the core duties: collecting tribute efficiently, filing reports that serve the Syndicate’s version of the truth, managing your assigned Lost, and keeping your wards squared. A visited ward is a healthy ward, and the deputy whose territory stays clean rises faster than the one who lets it bleed.
The climb
The Deputy pathway runs from Rook through Watcher, Hound, Collector, Keeper, Fixer, Enforcer, Reaver, Regulator, Arbiter, Wraith, Tyrant, and at the summit, Cobra. Each title carries the weight of what you did to earn it, and the names get darker because the role gets darker. A Rook is green. A Cobra is the Syndicate’s most trusted instrument in the parish, and the distance between those two is years of doing what the badge requires without flinching.
This path is a razor’s edge: intimidate the factions below you while demonstrating unwavering competence to the masters above. Every tribute is a test. Every report is proof of loyalty. You are not judged by your morals here. You are judged by your results.
