The life of a hero is a short and disappointing one in the Backwaters. This is not a role for those who want to protect and serve. This is a role for those who understand that true power lies in being the one holding the leash. To play a deputy is to trade your conscience for control, to become an apex predator with the full authority of a badge, answering not to the law but to the Syndicate that owns it.
The daily life of a corrupt lawman
Your day starts with intelligence, not a patrol. Check the recent reports, consult the records on known criminals, listen to whispers from your network. Knowing who is feuding, who is vulnerable, and who is getting too ambitious is how you maintain control. Then you make your rounds.
Collecting tribute
This is your core public-facing activity: visiting the businesses and faction leaders of Port Laveau to collect what is owed. It is a shakedown with a smile, a constant source of conflict and story as you negotiate, threaten, and document who is compliant and who needs reminding. A ward you visit and square is a ward that holds firm for the week. A ward you skip bleeds on its own, quietly, and the Syndicate notices which deputies let their wards go soft.
Managing the Lost
The department has a vested interest in the Lost. You will be tasked with keeping tabs on them, using them for information, coercing them into service for Syndicate operations. Whether you handle them with a kind word or a cruel hand is your character’s choice, but handle them you must, because the Lost are the resource the entire parish runs on, and the deputy who loses track of them has lost track of the job.
Weaving the official narrative
Every report you file and every warrant you issue writes the version of truth that benefits the Syndicate. Your job is not to find what happened; it is to write the version that keeps the house comfortable. Flag individuals as troublemakers. Lose inconvenient evidence. Bend the record, because in Port Laveau, the record is the only history anyone will ever read.
To wear the badge, submit an application through the in-world Story HUD. The department is covered in full under The Sheriff’s Department in this section, and the ward and tribute mechanics that govern your rounds live in The Ledger. The Syndicate is always looking for talent. The badge is waiting.
