Tommy had just finished his tour at HPD for the night, returning home, his row house a short distance from the station. His phone vibrates in his pocket as he's going through his sparsely stocked kitchen, looking for something to eat. He reaches in his pocket and notices a phone number with a "212" area code. His heart sinks -- a call from New York never being good news for him.

He picks up, clearing his throat. "Hello?" The other end is a hospital. The go on to tell him that there were still items from his ex-fiance at the hospital. Unbeknownst to them, they weren't aware he didn't know about her death as he'd simply been her emergency contact. Tommy had just learned the woman he almost married had died.

After sitting in his home for a while, looking toward a TV that wasn't on, he picked up the phone and made some calls. First was HPD, telling them he'd be leaving town for a week on emergency personal time, then calling to book his travel.

When Tommy arrives in New York, he gets to his hotel, drops his bags, changes and goes right to the funeral home. If he hadn't, he would have missed it.

Arriving at the funeral home, Tommy walks in the double doors, picking up a prayer card without looking at it and proceeding in, keeping his head down to avoid being noticed. The funeral was filled with NYPD cops, all in dress uniform, a sea of dark blue jackets and white gloves. As he moved through the crowd slowly the casket began to appear as the crowd moved away from obstructing his view. He saw the casket, opened, slightly off to the left. As the crowd kept parting in front of him, he noticed another casket appear to the right, closed. Tommy's heart began to go into a panic, beating frantically as the weight of what really happened coming over him. He reached in his pocket to pull out the prayer card to notice two names -- one his ex-fiance, the other "Jonathan Thomas Franklin".

Tommy began to walk backwards through the crowd, slamming into people, knocking them into one another before he turned to move through the crowd frantically. He found the funeral director in the lobby, greeting people as they entered, "Who's Jonathan?" he asked frantically. The funeral director looked at him with a sympathetic face, leaning in to speak in a calming voice. "The baby, sir. It's a terrible loss for everyone." Tommy grabbed the mans upper arm, just under his shoulder and tugged at it, "What baby?" he asked in an elevated voice, the crowd around turning their heads briefly. The funeral director leaned in, placing his hand on Tommy's shoulder, "The baby was full term when she died, sir. If you need to grieve, I can..." Tommy began to pull away and walk outside for air, pulling his collar open and gripping the prayer card with all his might as he held it on his side.

The full weight of what happened would be revealed to him over the course of the rest of the week. After leaving Tommy, his ex-fiance came to find out she was pregnant but by the time she realized, Tommy has left New York to try and get away from his past and start over. Eight and a half months had passed since Tommy left until she was walking on the street and attacked by a Brooklyn gang, looking to rough up the cop that busted their friend. The beating took a turn for the worse with a fateful swing of a bat, slamming into her skull and killing her instantly.

She would lay on the sidewalk for an hour before someone noticed her. Her lifeless body would be discovered along with a small brown bag, a greeting card inside. She left to purchase the card with the intent of writing Tommy to tell her about the baby and beg for forgiveness for doubting him being a good cop and shunning him with everyone else. Tommy would never learn of this part, only that she died along with his child he never knew about.
