One thing I have done is to work on my background and incorporate it into daily RP.

I think it makes for greater depth in characters.

In my case, I chose to be from my RL hometown of Toledo OH. I have incorporated odds and ends from Toledo in my character- Places mostly. At the same time I have added fictional events in my background.
