Do you believe this ? Me neither.
A simple book , covered in brown wrapping paper masking the tiltle, was left at the hospital with note. I can't tell you how many thing are left at the hospital all the time.. from pocket book with nothing inside, used condoms, unpaid bills , nail clippers, even dead bodies that nobody ever come to claim. But this was a book.. I said so above and unlike all these other discarded things i mentioned, this book came with note in it. A typewritten thing, not bigger than a post-it with a sentence that said : return the book to Hathian jail and give it to the warden or one of his staff. What was simpler, I ask you? yeah way, that's right you said it : Take the book back since we send doctors to treat the inmates all the time. Not a brainer , right? Wrong! Dead wrong. Doctor J Slade, Co- COS and coincidently also my wife, took it upon herself to return it. She is a trusting soul, everybody knows that who has met her. The type of girl who see the good side of satan.. (Hell! she is married to me, right?) She would give her last dime to any beggar and it she was to ask for it , god woud give her communion without confession, of that I am sure. Well they didn't see it that way at the Clinker and before you can say slammer she was handcuffed .. Yeah.. Handcuffed and dragged to the geol. (jail on the bayou side ) on that ground that hidden below the brown cover, some stale bag of cocaine was found . He attempt to explain how she came into the book's possession almost got her in isolation and request to speak to the jail's warden got her a shiner and a cheek's bruise. Now we like to think that even under pressure we remain civil and law abiding citizens, but my first reaction when i heard the news was to do what makes sense and as it was done to the Bastille , take the damned place down stone by stone and put the unconscionable staff on a pike and marched them to the guillotine. I bet a minute speech on the main square would bring 2009 CD citizens to join me , singing along when justice was done and law restored, but that would be irresponsible. Instead, I went to the cops , the lawyers , and subjected myself and Jasmine to the process that we call legal. It wasn't easy, and we suffered some damage. Bail was finally paid but the case remain opened. Thanks to the trust of my board , Doctor Slade keeps working and a generous policeman who still believes in the constitutional premise: that one is innocent till proven guilty , the case may be solved.
I don't want to claim I know who did it , I don't. However the book was from the university. At the hospital where it was left behind that day, we treat students and faculty all the time. True anybody could have left it behind but I know one person who did not and her name is Doctor Slade. However she will have to think twice now before returning anything
