Home Economics Syllabus

Course Objective:
Home Economics is both a social and scientific combined subject. This course will combine both theory and practice in order to help students develop understanding and solve problems. Of primary concern is the way families and individuals within those families manage their resources to meet all needs including but not limited to social, emotional, physical, intellectual and economic needs.

The primary focus of this course will be on the acquisition of knowledge, the development of skills, and the evolution of attitudes that will help students learn to take control of their own lives in the present and in the future. Students of both genders will be prepared for modern life in a consumer oriented society, and the basis for the development of a flexible and resourceful problem solving skills and personalities will be set by the rational problem solving exercises offered in this course.

The first quarter of this class will cover food and nutrtition

Lesson 1: Human Ecology – Basic Concepts and Misconceptions about the field of Home Economics

Elementary School Level

1. Welcome to Home Economics!
2. Food allergy and dietary restriction questionnaire to be sent home and filled out by parents.
3. Discussion of Upcoming Activities.

Lesson 2: Basic Food and Nutrition

Elementary School Level

1. Favorite foods. What do you like to eat?
2. Discussion of why we should eat the yuck foods too.

Lesson 3: Cooking Lab – Grain food group and basic baking

Elementary School Level

1. No bake cookies! Interspersed with discussion of commonly found grains and their uses.

Lesson 4: Cooking Lab – Vegetables and fruits basic preparation

Elementary School Level

1. Caramel apples! Students make their own with supervision
2. Crudites (veggies pre-cut by teacher) served with dressings, discussion on each veggie as it is eaten.

Lesson 5: Cooking Lab - Dairy Products

Elementary School Level

1. Chocolate, and Strawberry milk. Students to prepare their own
2. Homemade butter made in a jar!

Lesson 6: Cooking Lab – Meats, Poultry, Fish, Beans and Eggs

Elementary School Level

1. Basic Food Safety – Meats, poultry and fish
2. Three bean salad preparation by students

Lessons 7 and 8 if quarter allows to be determined by students.

Final Project:

Elementary Level

1. Students to take a short exam on the food groups. Exam will be multiple choice and true and false. Short cooking activity. Dish to be students choice.
