Berthier Street Bakery

By Annika Jaxxon

TYPE: Bakery

SLURL: http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/Hathian/81/82/35

BACKGROUND: Fueled on sugar and caffeine, Annika lives the gospel of capitalism every day though her private business transactions and those at the Pawn Shop. Her business tag line has always been, "if you need it, we can find it," taking pride in providing what Hathianites need any means. As the owner of the Bakery, Annika would bring this same sensibility and commitment to capitalism and community, viewing the Bakery as a hub for like-minded business people to meet over seemingly benign pastries and coffee. Annika has a commitment to community and a mind for collaboration and the bakery could be a place to serve the community with collaboration (and croissants!) She would be an active presence at the bakery, encouraging sales and making connections, and would hire a creative team challenged to create and submit new pastry creations for weekly specials as well as courting "guest bakers" for trendy, timely treats (who wouldn't by a Tartly Terrorist Tarte Tatin when fruits turn the world upside down?) New employees would be welcomed with RP'd training and brought into the fold with a cookie challenge. In addition to the gospel of capitalism, Annika is known for her helpless addiction to her favorite drug - sugar. While she prefers it in ice cream form, she will often hit the hard stuff in the form of glazed donuts, praline lace cookies, and other baked goods. Combining the two in a bakery is the perfect marriage of entrepreneurialism and sugar that would show the same energy and service to the whole community she has shown as assistant manager at the Pawn Shop, because what person or circumstance isn't improved with the right sugary treat? The Bakery would also serve as an exchange for less sugar-fueled business operations, where all kinds of deals could be struck over those coming for beignets and coffee.

UNIQUE: There are plenty of places to get coffee and baked goods in Hathian, but few where you can get your croissant with a side of investment opportunity. For this reason, the bakery would be well connected with other businesses in town, with a trendy emphasis on "hyperlocal" sourcing for ingredients from other local businesses (such as the flamin' cajun produce warehouse, the Clam, and local private farms). It would also be active in the newly formed Chamber of Commerce with possible sponsorship initiatives like Connecting with Croissants for business community networking events. Collaboration and connection would be at the core of its business model, letting creativity be fueled by sugar and caffeine. he Bakery would be active in community events as well as sponsoring its own in its great location right off of Hathian Highway.

EXPERIENCE: In my 2+ years in CD, I have worked at the Pawn Shop and served as the assistant manager of that business as well as taking on a leadership role within the Vipers faction. This has included hiring, interviewing and training staff, and helping to plan events, collaborative roleplays, handling crime and police raids, etc. Prior to coming to CD, I had served as admins and mods in a variety of RP sims across a few fantasy genres, and some I co-owned. I enjoy writing stories with people and sharing fun ideas to pursue, but I also know how to get things done with coordination and communication.

IDEAS: I have some experience with this at the Pawn Shop. A lot of it is being present and available for roleplay, providing people and RP hooks that are easy to take advantage of. Frequent events or participation in other community events make you a familiar and friendly face to approach. Just because the door is open doesn't mean people feel welcome to come in. I love the idea of doing things like community surveys, lotteries, contests, coffee discount cards and calls for products that can pull others in for everything from brief RPs, to longer stories, and recurring visits.

OTHER: Annika would do a Valentine's Day (VD) event because who doesn't love pastries? It would be a multistage event, having a Creative Cupcake Contest where innovating cupcake recipes are submitted to be featured at the Bakery the entire month of February with the winner being announced at the VD Street Party open to all who love frosting and carbs.
