Susan is a young, naive and idealistic rookie of the HPD. Her rather puis, friendly approach to law enforcement is in extreme contrast to what one expects meeting a cop in Hathian. Perhaps it’s her lack of experience and overt optimism that makes her more trusting. More time in the street, she might swing the baton with the best of them so her colleagues would expect.

She grew up in Michigan as a preacher’s daughter and unlike the stereotype, did not rebel but instead embraced a more ‘virtuous’ life. At 24, she is still a virgin and her views are colored by her upbringing. She follows the rules and commands of her superiors as if a copy of the long discarded HPD regulations handbook was uncovered under a mountain of Porkin’s fast food takeout cartons.

Over time her views and behaviour may change, as it has for many Hathianites. Time will tell.

Such innocence, especially from a cop , is ripe for manipulation in a city that even Sodom would feel compelled to blush.
