After the the theft of the swine flu/H1N1 vaccine, the advice from the CDC and medical authorities is that the H1N1 Influenza virus is widespread in Louisiana presently, although it is expected that only 0.4% of the infected population will require hospitalization and only face a 0.01% mortality rate, based on cases reported so far. Those most at risk include the young, eldrerly, frail or those already venerable to viral infections, such as pregnant women or patients receiving chemotherapy. The Department simply assumes the hospital will order replacements for the stocks that were lost, however, just to point out and correct any misconceptions, the vaccine wasnt recovered by the HPD, FDH or HGH etc and requires refrigeration, so wouldn't be of any use to anyone, even if it was.
So, in the meantime, the HPD will be following the CDC guidelines for Correctional and Detention Facilities (available here: http://www.cdc.gov/h1n1flu/guidance/correctional_facilities.htm), including implementing the following polices (although I am unsure about what Juvie are doing):
- Any visitor or staff member showing symptoms of the virus, will not be permitted to perform police duties or enter the police station or any detention facility, under any circumstances, for a period of 7 days, to prevent the further spread of the influenza amongst staff and other prisoners.
- Any prisoner who is detained with symptoms of the virus, or that subsequently shows symptoms of the virus whilst in custody, will be held quarantined in an isolation cell, until such time as the symptoms have passed, to prevent the spread of the influenza amongst staff and other prisoners (including troubled teens, but excluding other kid roles, who can go to hospital instead).
