For a while now the idea has been toyed with to give out IC awards/medals to officers showing exemplary service. The capability currently exists on the roster to give medals, but it's under-utilized at present due to the way it works. We've been discussing having an IC awards ceremony on a recurring annual or semi-annual basis, similar to the one Grace had hosted a couple years ago, but with more official awards rather than the "Most x" variety. The following awards have been proposed so far:
Medal of Honour/Valour - Awarded to officers showing extreme heroism or courage in the face of mortal danger
Purple Shield - Awarded for sustaining serious injury during an intelligently executed act of heroism or courage (limited due to the nature of CD. Makes no sense to hand it out to everyone who gets injured in the line of duty.)
Departmental Commendation - Awarded for performing above and beyond the expectations for a given rank/assignment
Public Service Award - Awarded for strengthening the bond between the HPD and the community at large (can be given sarcastically e.g. for shaking down businesses, harassing gangs, etc.)
Letter of Recognition - Awarded for any act that may not necessarily qualify for another award, but brass feels deserves to be recognized.
Please feel free to weigh in and add your own suggestions. If you'd like to recommend someone for an award, please contact your sergeant, or if one is not available, contact a lieutenant.
