Jack would find himself a place near the window, settling down into the plush armchair so he could look out over the night sky of Paris, the city below lit up in a spectacular display of lights. It was safe now, Caileigh was asleep, sprawled all over the bed with a bed sheet barely covering her, so he could at least admit maybe it was an amazing city - but he would still always order the freedom fries and liberty toast. After a long day, there wasn't much energy left in the couple. Poor Caileigh, she spent a good portion of her energy begging the french authorities not to throw Jack in jail after taking a number of selfies with famous historical paintings, past that red line. At least that's what he assumed she spent all her energy on, because as she slept soundly, all his poking and prodding couldn't get her to stir even an inch, which meant his original plans for evening exercise had to be put on hold. So now here he sat, staring out into the city, a brand new leather notebook in hand with his initials inscribed on the cover. It was a gift from Caileigh, and there was only one thing he could think to write..

"Your mother has told me I should take up writing down my thoughts, it would help keep me level headed when I need it the most. At first I looked at her like she was crazy, but... by now, you know your mother, beautiful and determined, and most definitely not crazy. We're on day 2 of our honeymoon, she's passed out, which means my plans for the night are out, so I guess it's as good a time as any to introduce myself.

Chances are, once I've left this earth, you'll hear a lot of stories about your old man, a lot of tales that will leave you questioning who I was and what I was all about. I need you to know I loved you and I loved your mother - more than anyone could love anything in the world. I leave you this, because I want you to know why I did the things I did.

It's late, but let me at least explain to you the promise I made myself two nights ago. As I'm sure you know now - your mother is not my first wife. In fact, you are not even my first child. It's a long story, but both were killed as a direct result of my own huberace. The night I married your mother I made a promise to myself. Never again. Many thought that would be the end of Jackson Hartigan and police work. It would make sense - play it straight - don't go looking for trouble and trouble won't find you, but that's just not what happens. There was a reason my first wife and daughter paid such a high price for what I did for a living. Fear. I was a nobody, a flat footed detective looking to make a name. Nobody had any idea what I was capable of. It wasn't until after the tragedy that I really came into my own. Well never again.

This is the promise I made... With my last breath I will protect you my child and you my wife. The criminal element of this city will learn to fear even thinking about harming either of you. For every move they make on me, will be reciprocated ten times on them. There's no law or civil right for them to hide under. A line in the sand has been drawn today, and anyone who dares to look at the line will soon see a whole new side of Jack Hartigan. The only way to keep the animals at bay is to be the bigger more dominate more aggressive animal, and from here on out... that is me. If there is one thing my former boss taught me - lead with force and instill fear."

And I heard as it were the noise of thunder,
One of the four beasts saying come and see and I saw
And behold a white horse
