THe way it happened according to Ol' Pete:

Mark comes from a small podunk town that you would drive by if you blinked your eye. A town that everybody knew who everyone was. The local sherrif was corrupt and the town knew it. Mark always tried to stay away from them.

You see, Mark stands at a little over 6 feet tall with an athletic build, black hair and brown eyes, he give off that look that he has had a bad day and you dont want to make it worse. So when the sherrif told him he needed to work for him, Mark had very little choice but to do so. The work the sherrif had Mark do was more of what he would call "scare jobs". He would scare the locals into paying the protection money they owed the sherrif. That is, until the one time went completely wrong. One of the local shoppkeeps had enough, at least that whats the Local news says. They said he was waiting for the sherrif, but when Mark showed up, the shopkeep was on the floor dead and the sherrif just pulled up. Sherriff planned to pin it on Mark unless he paid the good sherriff 10 grand. Mark not having that kind of money knew he needed to leave and leave now.

Taking the "offer" to leave town, he found himself joining the marine corp. After seeing his share of war, assasinations and depravity. He found himself with his discharge papers -signed, a meager few dollars and a bus ticket to Hathian, figuring he could find work as security or on the police force. So the choice to come to Hathian was never his own. Not able to go back home he takes the first step off the bus.Backpack in hand and being unknown as an advantage.
