Kaylin sits on the edge of the bed in her motel room looking down at the blank pages of the new journal she bought. She wasn’t the average girl, so it wasn’t just going to be a diary. This she had decided would be where she would write to her favorite person, the one who was left in Iraq.

Dear David,
I know that so much has gone since you had to leave me, but it’s okay. I just want to let you know what has been going on with me. I’ve found myself a town to live in. It’s rather nice to be honest. I fit in well, and no one knows about me. I think this will give me a chance to make it again. Maybe I will be able to move on with my life.

She pauses for a moment as a tear comes to her eye. She quickly brushes it away and then picks up where she left
off…

I’ve met some nice people here. You would like them. They are fun and caring. I’m going to college now too. It’s pretty exciting. I think I may become a kindergarten teacher like you always said I would be so good at.
