Kamaya awoke from a haze to half a world. The sheets and flimsy gown draped over her were as reassuring as the dingy, depressing walls and green lighting of the hospital recovery room. She tried to remember arriving here, but couldn't. She tried to remember her last location.

She remembered food at Chopsticks that had disgusted her. Food poisoning? No, she remembered the cute clerk, and how she watched the girl leave after work.

She remembered a fight, someone getting hit in the shoulder and crumpling to the floor in pain, a bone probably broken. Her shoulder didn't hurt any more than the rest of her body. No, that wasn't her, she had watched that from across a bar.

She remembered another girl. She smiled. That definitely wasn't it.

More recent. She tried to coach thoughts out of the drug-induced haze, to remember why she was in this bed. A party?

She remembered a promise of a party, from someone...

The memory's edge was like the frayed edges of a torn cloth--little random strings reaching out to nowhere. Hours went by, trying to follow each little string, trying to figure out what pattern it led to. But no matter the color, each string seemed to lead to a blood-soaked red.

Only one string seemed to go anywhere. A face, a familiar face that she'd seen before. Not someone that she knew, but someone she had met. Sort of. Like trying to remember one out of several hundred met casually at a party. But ultimately, the string still led nowhere. Maybe if she saw the person again. Maybe. Would she recognise them? She didn't even know how the thread even fit into the bigger picture.

Bigger picture. Half a world. She could feel the medical patch over her left eye. It was heavy, as heavy as the gown and blankets that restrained her. The drug-induced haze making her body heavy, difficult to move, as she slipped deeper into that haze.

"Hey. You alive?" That thread again, that face, something familiar. If she could only just remember it. She answered back, Yes, but the word never reached her lips.
