Back Story:

Emma is a British national that, after a lot of work and continual applications for her green card, had finally managed to make it into the police, and then eventually SWAT in NYC. She had a good run, was well respected by her colleagues and excelled in certain areas like marksmanship and martial arts, specifically disarming an opponent.

Unfortunately her good luck wasn't to last, and she was honourably discharged after a hostage situation ended badly. Her team were captured during the attempted rescue and every one of them except her were executed as retaliation. The gun men then beat her to within an inch of her life, and it was only because a second team was able to successfully storm the building that she survived.

Her wounds and the trauma of the situation lead to doubts about her ability to handle the high pressure of the job. After all, watching your team mates die and then being hurt like that really takes it toll. She was offered a desk job, but it was under paid and just not her cup of tea, so the discharge was the only other alternative for her.

Deciding to get away and make a new start with the little money she has, Hathian seems like a fair compromise. Cheap living, no one that knows her brutal background, and plenty of crime for her to try and clean up...
