Since beginning teaching, I have observed other classes going on on campus, and have notice the apathy of students wanting to attend.
Part of role play is participation, and the teacher sacrifice real time preparing lectures, and putting them on. Of course everyone will give excuses but some of my observations:
1) Some students have never attended any class even though I see them online during classes
2) Advanced noticed is given on the calender and in chat when classes begin, and students online chose not to attend.
An excuse will rise that the classes aren't during the times they are on. I, as well as sevral other professors, have offered classes at 9 am, 3 pm and 6 pm SLT, that covers most of our students time zones. I have given private classes for those not able to make any of those three times.
An excuse will rise that it isnt their faculty. If any five students get together I will teach ANY topic they desire (I can RP any subject) at ANY time they so chose with advance notice so i can schedule my RL.
As with a real university, students not attending classes should result in failure and their status change to probation and eventually expulsion. Sororities and social clubs are conditional of having passing grades in real life, as they should be at CU.
I already keep a spreadsheet of attendance and assignment grades for all of my students and would gladly help set up or manage one for all of the other professors (a centralized one would be nice).
Don't get me wrong, I love the RP teaching, but it seems the students aren't keeping up their end of the RP class time to make CU really fun and successful.
I would love to hear input from other faculty and students on this topic.
