Draft Syllabus
I. COURSE OVERVIEW
Designation: BIO 102
Title: Fundamentals of Biology: Human Physiology
Class Times: TBA based on interest and availability
Short Description: This course covers the introductory principles and concepts of animal physiology, with a strong emphasis on the human system. The course will examine cellular, organ, and whole body levels of organization. It will highlight a key theme in biology:the relationship between structure and function and the importance of homeostatic control systems.
Short lectures will be reinforced by laboratory sessions involving student volunteers. Labs will reinforce topics taught in lecture and familiarize students with some of the unorthodox laboratory techniques unique to Columtreal University.
PREREQ: NONE. Course intended for all majors having interest in human biology. Licensed medical practitioners may audit course for Continued Medical Education (CME) credit.
II. PROVISIONAL SCHEDULE
SESSION 1: WELCOME & INTRODUCTION TO HOMEOSTASIS
LECTURE: Mechanisms of homeostasis, including temperature regulation and water and ion balance.
LAB: Ice packs, heat pads, and student "volunteers" will be put to use to demonstrate how regulation of the internal environment is achieved.
SESSION 2: THE NERVOUS SYSTEM
Lecture: Electrodiffusion, nerve action potential, the synapse, coupling of nerves with skeletal muscle (excitation-contraction).
LAB: Electrical stimulation and student volunteers will reinforce concepts taught in lecture; including pain stimuli.
SESSION 3: CIRCULATION & RESPIRATION
Lecture: Regulation of circulation and blood pressure; gas exchange.
Lab: Stress positions and restraints to illustrate principles of circulatory and repiratory regulation.
SESSION 4: REGULATION OF REPRODUCTION
Lecture: Hormone cycles and their effects.
Lab: TBA
SESSION 5: STUDENT CHOICE
Digestion, Metabolism, Movement and Locomotion, Etc.
