Over the past week or so, Jack and I have been going over some possible changes for the department. One of those changes that you all have already seen and been told of is the removal of the detective division from the PD in order to replace it with something a bit more functional. The solution that we came up with was to disband the detective division entirely and come up with a new approach that would hopefully address some of those issues.

One of the main issues was that detectives were almost entirely segregated from the patrol division as far as organization and responsibilities were concerned. As a result, Jack has had to shoulder a large amount of the workload that comes with his rank while I simply had to manage a small group of people, and that same small group of people were tasked with investigating a very large number of cases. In order to alleviate that, the new unit will be made up of regular patrol officers who will be trained in investigating major crimes including Robbery with Aggravated Assault, Terrorism, Attempted Homicide, Homicide, Kidnapping, and Gang Violence. All other cases will be investigated by the reporting patrol officer either with or without the assistance of MCU officers.

Officers will be appointed by a Lieutenant or the senior officer of the MCU (who will be decided when the unit is officially formed). A lot of the time, detectives would get transferred and then work a few cases before becoming inactive. In order to alleviate that, all MCU officers will be reviewed quarterly for activity and behavior. If they don’t live up to our expectations, they will be reassigned.

This unit is still a work in progress, and will be made official after a few things are finished on the infrastructure side and we have finalized the more minute details of how things will be run, but I felt that you should all know what we’re up to. If any of you have any comments/suggestions, feel free to let me know about them and I’ll see what I can do.
