Sociology 101

Postby Ethereal on Thu Feb 11, 2010 5:14 pm

Hey, everyone.
My character, Kate Henry, is going to be teaching Sociology 101 come the new semester. The course will include the basic ideas, theories, and aspects of sociology either one or two class sessions per week, depending on how many students enroll.

Here's a very basic course outline, just so those of you who play students can get a general idea of what's to come:

1. Introduction to Sociology
2. Culture
3. Socialization and Social Interaction
4. Deviance, Crime, and Social Conformity
5. Stratification, Class, and Inequality
6. Sexism and Ageism
7. Gender vs. Sex
8. Race and Ethnicity
9. Social Change and Social Movement

Incorporated into the lessons will be a lot of group/paired activities and some writing assignments. There will not be a mid-term or final exam, but, rather, essays instead (and don't worry -- I definitely don't expect anyone to actually type up a full 5-6/+ page paper; really, it's not THAT serious.).

Once I get a good idea of how many students will be in the class, I'll be able to decide on whether or not to make a group for the class, what time to have the class meet, etc.

ALSO -- Feel free to IM me in-world, too. If I'm online and not afk, I'll likely answer right away. If I'm offline, an IM -or- notecard is fine.

Welcome! Welcome!

Yay! More classes.

Just bringing this thread back to life so that anyone who is interested in having their character enroll in Kate(my character)'s Sociology class can stay updated.

I've begun adding names to the class' roster, but there's still room left. If you'd like to take Sociology, feel free to IM me in-world or send a notecard or even reply right here in the thread, and I'll add your name to the roster. :-)

Btw -- I won't be available next weekend, Fri. - Mon., as I'll be away on a trip in RL. Just a head's up!

When is the class? I can only not make it Monday and Thursday 3pm-6:30pm because I have a rl class then.

Still undecided about that, at the moment. Since there are still a few weeks left until the new semester begins, I haven't given the class a definite time/day, yet. My plan was to see, first, how many students would be interested in joining, and then coordinate with them/you guys on what day and time was most convenient.

Also, if you mean 3pm-6:30pm SLT for those Monday/Thursday classes, that's perfectly fine. I wouldn't be able to make it at those times, either. Not for Mondays, at least. I'm not available on Mondays at all.

It's looking like it'll either be sometime after 4pm SLT (if it's a Wednesday) or sometime between 9am SLT and 2pm SLT (if it's Tuesday, Thursday or Friday), or even after 4pm on a Tues. or Fri., as well. I know that's a broad time span, but it's what I've got so far.

I'll make sure to keep updating everyone as things progress.

Also, keep in mind that you may not have the same group of students at every session. There will always be the new folks who want to drop in when they hear there's a class being held. How you want to handle that is up to you of course, but I thought I'd point that out since you're still in the planning stages.

You know, I didn't even consider that.

Still, I do have lots of availability, so hopefully I'll be able to provide time convenience for both Europeans and Americans. That's what I'm attempting, at least.

Thanks, Trin :-).

Ack >.<!

Sorry, Ellis, and to whomever else viewed the post/update I gave just before Trin's last comment, but I was thinking 3pm-6:30pm my time when I read Ellis' post, as well as when I posted the above, instead of thinking of it in Second Life time. Fail. It's looking like it'll be either a Tuesday or Thursday either at or after 7pm SLT, or sometime between 9am and 2pm SLT.

Just another update, and I definitely stole this from Trin. Well.. perhaps "stole" isn't the best term. More like.. he inspired me. Yes, yes. That's it.

In any case, I've decided it'd be a good idea to list the times during the week that I'm available. Let me know which of these time spans work for you if you're interested in joining the class (professors are welcome to join, as well, of course, if they so desire).

** In SLT **

TUESDAY, THURSDAY, FRIDAY
8am - 3pm
After 8pm (except Fridays)

SATURDAY, SUNDAY
8am - 3pm

Flattery will get you everywhere, my dear. Now, as for these desires ... I may have to try and sneak into a weekend class or two.
