Sofia Noelani Keolanui was born in Hawaii. Her family is active in the surfing world so her future was pretty inevitable: Competitions, practicing, working on getting up to the top of her game. Of course, things don't go as planned. After a year and a half in the competition for the women's championship, a shark got her at the age of nineteen in Hawaii. It ripped a chunk out of her upper leg and, while she was eventually able to walk again, there was no question about going back to competitive surfing. Angry, and hurting, at 21, Sofia resolved to get as far away from the islands as she could for a little while. She ran out of money around Hathian, at least ready cash. She now works as a PE teacher at Seaside.
